Tuesdays - 6pm -10pm (w)
Wednesday 8am - 1pm (w) OR 6pm -10pm (fn)
Thursdays - 8am - 1pm (w) OR 6pm -10pm (w)
Fridays - 6pm - 10pm (fn)
Saturdays - 8am - 1pm (fn) OR 1pm - 6pm (w) OR 6pm - 10pm (w)
Sundays - 1pm - 6pm (fn) OR 6pm - 10pm (fn)

Team Information

Passage House is a rapid response Assessment Hub aimed to support new rough sleepers with no local connection to Westminster to find a suitable pathway for them to sustain a life off the streets. For a lot of people this will mean returning to their home area and reconnecting with family or support networks. Men, women, couples aged 18 or over are offered accomodation a maximum stay is 28 days whilst we work with them to provice a pathway.

Clients are referred into Passage House via Outreach teams. These are teams who work overnight on the streets of Westminster approaching new rough sleepers and engaging them in services. This means that guests at Passage House will be arriving in the evening and night time.

About this Role

The volunteers will maintain the Passage House reception area, provide some support to project worker staff and engage with residents. We also need your help to research and record services such as charity support, council support, church support, drug and alcohol services and food banks. You may also be asked to perform some administrational tasks. If you’re interested in increasing you knowledge of homelessness this should prove very interesting for you. This role offers a great opportunity to gain an insight into the running of a residential service for homeless people.

Tasks will include:

  • Answering telephone calls, transferring calls to staff and taking messages
  • Answering the door to residents and visitors
  • Engaging with clients whilst they are in the reception area and thereby creating a friendly and welcoming environment
  • Supporting the duty project worker, e.g. making appointments, dealing with basic queries and some admin tasks
  • Researching local services in other London Boroughs and in other counties in UK

Qualities needed:

  • Reliability and good time keeping
  • A friendly and confident telephone manner
  • Calm, non-judgmental and empathetic
  • Ability to accurately record and pass on information
  • A welcoming, friendly and respectful attitude towards residents and visitors
  • Able to work within professional boundaries
  • Basic computer skills, especially Word, email, internet
  • Proactive in engaging with residents
