The Passage awarded £100,000 from Barclays’ Community Aid Package to help house people who are homeless during COVID-19

The Passage has been selected to receive £100,000 as part of Barclays’ Community Aid Package, to support their work housing rough sleepers and vulnerable individuals during the coronavirus pandemic.

The Barclays’ Community Aid Package provides assistance to charities helping communities most impacted by COVID-19 through corporate donations and matched colleague fundraising. The Passage is one of 100 UK charities receiving support.

Barclays’ donation will help fund the costs of essential items and appliances for individuals that the charity is moving into safe and secure accommodation so that they can eat and sleep comfortably in their new homes. The funding will also cover ongoing resettlement support provided by a dedicated team at The Passage.

The Passage has ensured the safety of rough sleepers since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, supporting hundreds of people into into emergency accommodation during the first lockdown, and working to secure sustainable housing in the private rented sector thereafter. The Barclays’ Community Aid package will play a key role in this continuing journey.

Mick Clarke, Chief Executive at The Passage said, “So many people have been impacted by this awful virus, but for those on the streets with nowhere to self-isolate it has been terrifying. As we now enter a second national lockdown, our priority is to ensure that those on the streets have somewhere safe to stay, with the support they need and most importantly, do not return to the streets. With this generous donation from Barclays we will be able to do just that; providing ongoing support to enable them to rebuild their lives.”

Nigel Higgins, Barclays’ Group Chairman said, ‘“COVID-19 has created an unprecedented social and economic impact in the UK, with many sadly experiencing greater hardship due to the crisis. Incredible charities, such as The Passage, have been playing a vital role in the UK’s response to the pandemic, ensuring urgent help reaches those most in need of support. As a bank we have been doing all we can for our customers, clients and colleagues, and we hope that our 100×100 programme and wider community aid package helps ensure that everybody in the communities in which we live and work is supported through this crisis.”
