Cardinal Vincent Nichols Archbishop of Westminster

Cardinal Vincent Nichols became our Patron in 2009.

Cardinal Vincent has been supportive of the work of The Passage for many years having been based in London in the 1980s and 1990s as General Secretary of the Bishops conference and then as an auxiliary Bishop to Cardinal Hume before moving to Birmingham as Archbishop in March 2000. On being appointed as Archbishop of Westminster he took on the duties of Patron of The Passage. As soon as he was appointed Archbishop Vincent was keen to visit The Passage and spend time in the Resource Centre getting to talk to the homeless people who were looking for our help.

In 2010 The Passage marked its thirtieth anniversary. Cardinal Vincent celebrated Mass in Westminster Cathedral in thanksgiving for all of those who had served and been served by The Passage and after welcomed us to a reception in Westminster Cathedral Hall.

Cardinal Vincent has taken an active interest in The Passage over his time as Patron supporting events such as ‘Night under The Stars’ to welcoming a group of London Oratory students to Westminster Cathedral at the end of a sponsored walk for The Passage.

Cardinal Vincent was very involved in the celebrations to mark the opening of the refurbished St Vincent’s Centre being part of the official opening with Prince William and then subsequently returning to bless the building.

I have been aware of the reputation and work of The Passage for many years and have come to understand more fully the impact of the work of its staff and volunteers on some of the most vulnerable people in society
