Listening first: How our teams build trust

When people think about homelessness services, they often think about accommodation, benefits support or healthcare.

But before any of that can happen, trust needs to be built.

Many people who access The Passage have experienced trauma, exclusion or significant adversity. Some may have shared their experiences repeatedly without getting the support they needed. Others may feel anxious about asking for help.

That’s why our teams take a trauma-informed, non-judgemental and person-centred approach to every conversation.

It means:

  • taking the time to listen.
  • understanding that every person’s experience is different.
  • creating an environment where people feel safe, respected and supported.
  • explaining support clearly and helping people understand what happens next.

Most importantly, it means recognising that trust isn’t automatic. It’s built conversation by conversation.

Those first conversations help identify immediate needs and connect people to support as quickly as possible.

But they also create something equally valuable… Confidence.

Confidence in returning. Confidence in engaging. Confidence in taking the next step.

For many clients, those first conversations become the foundation for everything that follows.
