Everyday we see that mental health issues can be a cause and consequence of homelessness
Recent statistics* reveal that 51% of individuals seen rough sleeping between April and June this year (who were assessed) were reported as having mental health support needs.
Alanah – who heads up our Engagement and Outreach Service – explains what’s behind this shocking statistic.
“Mental health problems are a cause and consequence of homelessness. They can lead to the loss of a job and make it really difficult to find or maintain a tenancy. Traumatic events can lead to homelessness. And spending time on the streets perpetuates the initial trauma. We all need stability, so imagine being on the streets, without a safe space. How are you meant to work through issues and gain access to support if you’ve got nowhere to call home?”
The team’s ultimate mission is to help secure homes and psychological support for people struggling and sleeping rough. That starts with giving people the understanding and compassion they deserve.
After fleeing an abusive relationship, Jade slept rough for eight years.
During this time, our Engagement and Outreach Team continued to offer their support. However, Jade found it difficult to accept the help she truly needed, as a result of the trauma she had experienced.
With consistency, compassion and kindness, Jade was able to trust in our services, and is now leading a happier and stable life.
.“Now I have a place I call home, and look forward to the future.”. – Jade.
