About this volunteer role

The Passage is looking for a Church Appeals Speaker Volunteer to visit churches across London and make appeals at Mass, speak with church groups and deliver presentations to Confirmation Groups. The majority of church speaking engagements are often accompanied by a collection in aid of The Passage which churches total up and send over to us after the event.

The Passage is lucky enough to be well supported by churches across London and demand for our church speakers is increasing. All appeals are organised to fit within the schedule of our speakers and will be done on an ad-hoc basis. The majority of speaking engagements will be on Sundays with the occasional request for a Saturday evening appearance. All speaking engagements will be organised in collaboration with our Church Appeals Speakers to ensure that talks fit easily in the speaker’s calendar and are planned well in advance.

A detailed knowledge of the church is not essential to the role. We are simply looking for a confident speaker who can communicate the message of The Passage for between 5-10 minutes to help us raise funds at local churches.

All information and equipment, including a script, will be provided to volunteers. Training will also be available on request so that volunteers are well-prepared before their first speaking engagement.

The role will require working closely with our Community Fundraising Manager Max and our Church Appeals Coordinator Mary, who helps organise visits to churches.

We are committed to creating a safe, non-judgmental space for everyone here at The Passage, regardless of who they are. There is an expectation that volunteers understand this and behave accordingly towards people using our services, other volunteers, visitors and members of staff.

Main duties

  • Delivering appeals at Churches that detail the work of The Passage.
  • Agreeing church speaking dates with The Passage’s Church Appeals Coordinator.
  • Build positive working relationships with church administrators and leaders.
  • Attend all talks promptly and in line with The Passage’s values.
