Volunteering

Sunday Social Club Volunteer

Home for Good provides ongoing support to formerly homeless people who have been resettled into accommodation. The purpose of the service is both to help people sustain their tenancies and to settle into what will often be a new community. Through providing ongoing and holistic support we hope to reduce the number of people who return to the street after moving into accommodation.

The Home for Good Social Club provides a space for former clients of The Passage, and others who have experienced homelessness, who are now in their own accommodation to meet, share lunch together, participate in a range of activities, and link into a wider range of support networks.

Commitment:

11:30 – 15:00 fortnightly or monthly, the club runs every week (hours can be arranged flexibly)

About this Role

We are seeking volunteers who are confident in approaching and engaging with clients. You will help to make the session as enjoyable as possible for out clients and contribute to a warm and relaxing atmosphere. You might be helping to prepare lunch and/or helping to facilitate activities or possibly outings.

What will I be doing?

  • Welcoming new clients to the club and explaining the nature of the service
  • Listening to clients and discussing their interests
  • Directing clients to appropriate services
  • Preparing and serving food
  • Tidying and cleaning up the kitchen and the club setting
  • Helping to run activities, sessions and outings

What skills do I need?

  • You’re compassionate, kind and non-judgemental
  • You’re committed and reliable
  • You’re patient and able to motivate and engage others
  • You’re able to maintain and respect The Passage policies and procedures
  • You have a genuine commitment to working to empower clients with complex and multiple issues
  • You have excellent communication and listening skills
  • A basic DBS check is required for this role which will be conducted by The Passage

What you can expect:

  • A straightforward approach to volunteering
  • A full induction and training for your role
  • Support and supervision to help you carry out your role
  • Free meals during the club and activities, and expenses to help with travel costs

The role is subject to the provision of two references, an informal interview and attendance at a Volunteer Induction session. For questions about the role or the application process, please contact Home for Good on 07921 970765

A few volunteering roles require volunteers to do a DBS check (previously called CRB checks). If your role requires a DBS check, we will ask you to disclose any spent and unspent conviction, cautions, reprimands or final warnings when we receive your application, except those which are “protected” as defined by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (as amended in 2013).

Some roles require a DBS check because of the nature of the tasks involved and because our clients are classed as Adults at Risk which means certain roles are exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. Having a criminal record will not necessarily prevent you from volunteering with The Passage but some convictions may require further discussion.

If you would like to discuss this in more detail before submitting an application, please email [email protected] or call 020 7592 1863

In accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998, the information provided on this form will be used in the recruitment and selection of volunteers and may be disclosed to all those who need to see it. It will also form the basis of the confidential volunteer record.
